Step 4 Section A (5minutes)
T: That’s great! Ok, turn to page 25. A boy named Sun Ning is also going to have a birthday party. Look at the picture. Find Jenny and Ted.
T: Can Jenny come to Sun Ning’s party?
T: Can Ted come to his party?
T: Then look at 1a and do the matching task.
T: Now listen to the tape and write the names next to the correct students in the picture. Then check the answers.

Step 5 Listening (5minutes)
T: Ok, let’s move on to 2a. Listen to me carefully and read after me.
T: Listen to the reading. In each conversation the person says that they can or they can’t come to the party. Listen to each conversation and then circle the word that makes the sentence correct.
Play the recording again and check the answers.

T: Look at the calendar. What day is it today?
S: Today is Wednesday.
T: What’s the date today?
S: Today is Oct. 14th.
T: If you want to ask the day and the date at a time, you can say “what’s today?” Well, answer my question now. What’s today?
S: It’s Wednesday 14th.
T: Let’s play pin-pong game. Use the three sentence patterns: 1) what day is today/ tomorrow/ the day after tomorrow? /what day was it yesterday/ the day before yesterday? 2) What’s the date today? 3) What’s today?

A: What about tomorrow?
B: I’d love to. But I have a piano lesson.
A: Oh, what about the day after tomorrow?
B: But I have to babysit my sister
Ask students to do pair work and make a conversation like the sample one. Then ask students to perform.

Step 5 homework assignment
Make a calendar for next week and write down your plans.

Unit 5: Can you come to the party? Period Four
1. Teaching objectives
Read and write about replies to invitations.
Help students to review what they’ve learned in this unit through self check.

2. Teaching focus
How to decline invitations politely in a letter.

3. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Revision and lead-in (5 minutes)
Check the homework. Ask some students to tell the class their planned activities for next week. For example:
I am visiting my grandparents next Friday evening.
Ask several students to practice “I am doing……”
T: Great! Turn to page 29 to look at 3a. There is an e-mail. It’s written by Sonia to Henry. Sonia received an invitation from Henry. Now she writes back.

Step 2 Reading (20 minutes)
Ask a student to read it to the class and ask students to read it together for once. Then ask questions.
T: Do Sonia accept the invitation?
S: No.
T: What does she say to decline the invitation? Underline the sentence please.
S: “I’m sorry I can’t visit you this week.”
T: Yes. Sonia is very busy. Can you complete her calendar? Read the e-mail again and fill the chart on the left.
Then check the answers by asking:
What’s Sonia doing on Sunday?/ Monday/ Tuesday?

After that, ask students to pay attention to some sentences and phrases:
1) Thank you for your invitation. = thanks for inviting me.
2) Visit somebody.
3) Go to the dentist/ doctor.
4) Have tennis training
5) The school team
6) A chemistry / math/ physics test

Ask students to repeat. And then let the students find out the sentences in the e-mail:
1) Talk about obligations: “has to” “have to”
E.g. And tomorrow, I have to go to the dentist.
And I have to study for my chemistry test on Thursday.
2) Talk about planned activities: “be doing”
E.g. This evening I’m going to my cousin’s birthday party.
On Friday evening, I’m going to the movies with some friends.
Then ask students to read after me.
T: Ok, very good. Then fill in the blanks in the e-mail message using “be doing” and “have to” patterns.
Give students two minutes to fill in the chart and ask students to read their version to the class. And ask students to repeat.

Step 3 Writing practice (10 minutes)
T: Now, class, suppose your friend Jim wrote an e-mail and invited to visit him next week. But you are really very busy and can’t visit. Please write an e-mail to him and say why you can’t visit next week. I’ll give you five minutes to write it. Start!
Check and choose several students to read their writing and point out the mistakes.

Step 4 Game: Which party do you like best? (10 minutes)
T: Now we have three kinds of parties for you. One is KTV party for singing. Another is dancing party and the last one is picnic party. Now the first student in the line go and make a survey and tell me the results.
Then write down the results on the blackboard.
Then ask students to make conversations. Say, one representative who chooses the most popular party invites one student who chooses the less popular parties to come to join him or her. Ask them to imitate the sample dialogue on page 29.
